Meditation; Its Practice and Benefits – Part I

The practice of meditation is of great help in harnessing the peace of mind and best possible mental health. Many of the beginners find it very difficult to prepare themselves for the successful practice of meditation session because of lack of discipline and the proper understanding on the techniques and preparation.

Meditation is the seventh limb of Ashtanga Yoga of Great Sage Patanjali.  In his yoga sutras it is defined as an unbroken flow of awareness. After the successful practice of concentration of the mind on any chosen object or principle one can progress into this stage.  Regular practice of this technique is best mental tonic for building the greater mental strength, vitality and vigor to the practitioners.

The  journey of the practice takes place through the proper lifestyle and food habits which are conducive to the yogic lifestyle. Apart from the principles of diet and nutrition is very helpful to adapt the satvik food for the serenity of the mind. In addition to this application of healthy life style which is perfect with circadian rhythms helps a lot.

Postures for the practice of meditation:

It is of great help to master few of the meditative yoga poses to ensure the good practice  as the technique require a long time to maintain  homeostasis condition of the mind and body without any kind of  fluctuations. Vajrasana, Padmasana  and Swastikasana are few helpful poses . The mastery on these asana brings calmness and peace which is of great ease in the technique.

Role of Pranayama in the meditation

Pranayama is practice of regulation of the flow of vital force in the system. This technique is of great use in the channelization of the mental energy as the thoughts are directly connected through the breath pattern. The smooth and rhythmic breathing induces sense of tranquility for better concentration. The application of Bandhas and Mudras in Pranayama facilitate the practice.


It is very important to relax the mind before the practice of meditation. The techniques become easy when the mind and mental arena relaxed . This also helps to prevent the sleep during the practice.
